Skills for Life

The Learning and Skills Council’s Skills for Life programme aims to ensure that literacy, language and numeracy skills are developed to the level that enables all employees to get the job done, improve performance and increase profitability.

The training is fully-funded and aimed at businesses with employees with less than Level 2 qualifications (the equivalent to 5 GCSE’s grade A*-C).

What will Skills for Life offer my business?

Skills for Life focuses on skills such as:

  • reading and understanding – schedules; documentation
  • calculating and measuring – materials; orders
  • understanding work-related signs – health & safety; directions
  • using statistical data – sales forecasts; trends
  • communication – customer handling; reports.
  • You should also be aware of the potential needs of workers who do not have English as their first language. They may face additional barriers at work and addressing the language issue will help employers make better use of their experience and skills.

ESOL courses provide essential language skills for the workplace and aids employee integration and progress.

What’s involved?

There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach. Some programmes are qualification-focused while others are more informal to attract employees reluctant to engage in training.

Is my business eligible?

It doesn't matter what size your business is to access this programme. Delivery of basic literacy and numeracy training to learners will be free if it's organised through a provider funded by the LSC for delivery of Skills for Life.
